Είναι το τέταρτο νησί σε έκταση και σε πληθυσμό από τα Επτάνησα. Σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2001 ο πληθυσμός είναι 22000 και η έκταση του νησιού είναι 320τχλμ. Μαζί με τα κοντινά νησάκια Κάλαμο και Καστό αποτελούν τον Δήμο της Λευκάδας . Είναι ένα νησί στεριά αφού η πρόσβαση γίνεται από μια πλωτή γέφυρα συνολικού μήκους 70μ. Η γέφυρα αποτελείται από δυο καταπέλτες 10μ και το κεντρικό σώμα 50μ, αναλόγως την ροή σκαφών ανοίγει ο ένας ή και οι δύο καταπέλτες και αν είναι πολύ μεγάλο περιστρέφεται γύρω από τον άξονα της.
